    Iraq election officials count votes
    Arab Herald
    Tuesday 9th March, 2010

With vote counting underway in Iraq, officials have said their work is being complicated by the large number of overseas and displaced people votes coming in.

The task of tallying the votes occurred shortly after the polls closed Sunday, with initial results suggesting a good showing by the centrist coalition led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

While there has been a certain sense of pride in how the elections were conducted, a string of attacks occurred mainly in Baghdad, with insurgents carrying out some deadly strikes.

A series of attacks left more than 30 people dead.

Iraq's people have expressed satisfaction with the way the vote was carried out, after defying the threats of insurgent violence.

Iraqis were able to express their opinions with the help of overseas and Iraqi troops who provided security during the process.
